Celebrating Peak Peach Season: A Simple Yet Irresistible Dessert

Here in Utah, peaches are truly at their prime right now – affordable, plentiful, and bursting with an incredible natural sweetness. It’s that magical time of year when the peach skin practically slides off, a clear sign of perfect ripeness. I confess, peaches are one of the few fruits I could happily devour until I’m absolutely stuffed! Last year, I got a little ambitious and learned how to can them, which was an adventure. Turns out, I was a bit too zealous, because we still have plenty left! Since my canning days are on hold, but my love for peaches is as strong as ever, I decided to focus on a simple dessert where these glorious fruits could truly shine.

While juicy, ripe peaches hardly need much embellishment, I believe this recipe manages to make them feel even more homemade and profoundly comforting. The streusel topping, a delightful blend of gluten-free flour, brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon, comes together in mere minutes. The most challenging part of this entire process, honestly, is the delicious anticipation of waiting for these beauties to bake to golden perfection. The aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water! This recipe celebrates the peach in its most glorious form, letting its inherent sweetness and texture be the star while providing a wonderful contrast with the crumbly, spiced topping.

Perfect for Any Occasion: From Labor Day BBQs to Cozy Evenings

This incredible dessert is not just a seasonal treat; it’s versatile enough for a variety of occasions. It would be an absolute showstopper for your Labor Day celebrations, offering a lighter, fruit-forward alternative to heavier desserts. But don’t limit it to holidays! These Streusel Stuffed Peaches are perfect for any day you crave a delicious and wholesome treat, right up until the peach season finally bids us farewell. I’m already planning to sneak this recipe in at least one, if not several, more times before the peaches are gone!

Speaking of Labor Day – what exciting plans do you have? I truly wanted to share this recipe early, especially for those on the East Coast, so you’d have a fantastic dessert idea for your holiday get-togethers. However, one of my absolute favorite things to do on a holiday is luxuriate in a long, well-deserved sleep-in. Now, as the day progresses, we’re gearing up for a fun fishing trip and later, a casual BBQ with friends and my sister. We’re keeping the sides simple and fresh with classic corn on the cob and refreshing watermelon.

If you’re still brainstorming main dish ideas for your BBQ, allow me to recommend a personal favorite: The Best Lemon Grilled Chicken. It’s wonderfully flavorful and, like these peaches, also free of common allergens, making it a crowd-pleasing choice. And if you’re looking for another light, fruit-based dessert option that’s quick and easy, be sure to check out these delicious Air Fryer Bananas. They’re a fantastic way to enjoy a sweet treat with minimal fuss.

Tips for Choosing & Preparing Your Peaches

The success of this dessert truly begins with the peaches themselves. Look for peaches that are fragrant and give slightly when gently squeezed. Avoid any that are too firm (they’re not ripe enough) or too soft (they might be overripe or bruised). The skin should peel away easily, indicating peak ripeness. When preparing them, wash the peaches thoroughly. Halving them is straightforward: cut around the pit, twist the halves apart, and then gently remove the pit. For the streusel cavity, a melon baller or a small spoon works perfectly. Be careful not to scoop out too much flesh – you need enough space for the streusel but also enough peach structure to hold its shape beautifully during baking.

Crafting the Perfect Allergy-Friendly Streusel

The streusel topping is what truly makes these stuffed peaches irresistible. Our recipe uses a combination of gluten-free flour, brown sugar for depth, granulated sugar for sweetness, a hint of cinnamon for warmth, a pinch of salt to balance flavors, and certified gluten-free oats for texture. The key to a crumbly streusel is using chilled coconut oil, which helps create those delightful, sandy crumbles when mixed with a fork. Avoid overmixing; you want a texture that’s still loose and crumbly, not a paste. This simple blend ensures a delicious topping that’s entirely free from common allergens, proving that allergy-friendly baking doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor or texture.

Baking to Perfection: Achieving Golden Brown Goodness

Baking these streusel-stuffed peaches is a straightforward process, but a few tips can ensure a perfect outcome. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure even cooking from the start. Greasing your baking dish is crucial to prevent sticking and make cleanup a breeze. Arrange the peach halves cut-side up, making sure they fit snugly but aren’t overcrowded. Carefully fill each peach with the streusel mixture, being mindful not to let too much spill into the pan, as stray streusel can burn. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is a beautiful golden brown and the peaches are fork-tender. The exact baking time may vary depending on the size and ripeness of your peaches, so keep an eye on them towards the end. A perfectly baked peach will be soft and yielding, releasing its sweet, aromatic juices.

Serving Suggestions & Leftovers

While these Streusel Stuffed Peaches are incredible straight from the oven, allowing them to cool slightly before serving is recommended. This allows the flavors to meld and prevents you from burning your tongue! The ultimate pairing, of course, is a generous scoop of allergy-friendly vanilla ice cream. The cold, creamy ice cream melting over the warm, tender peach and crumbly streusel creates a truly divine contrast. You can also garnish with a sprinkle of extra cinnamon or a few fresh mint leaves for an elegant touch. If you have any leftovers (a rare occurrence!), store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave for a quick treat, though the streusel will be best enjoyed fresh.

This dessert amplifies the already in-season, ripe peaches and fills them with a brown sugar streusel. Warm and baked, this just begs for vanilla ice cream to melt on top of it. A few, pantry-staple ingredients make this mostly-fruit dessert feel wholesome. Free of gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, peanut and tree nuts. Top 8 free and vegan too!

Ingredients

  • 2 large or 3 medium ripe firm peaches, halved and pitted
  • 2 Tablespoons gluten-free flour
  • 3 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup oats (quick cooking or regular–as long as they’re certified gluten-free)
  • 2 Tablespoons chilled coconut oil
  • Dairy-free vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. (I did a 9×9 square glass pan, but use whatever will fit your peaches.)
  2. Using a melon baller, or small spoon, scoop out and discard the red flesh from the center of each of the halved peaches. You want enough space for the streusel, but you don’t want to waste too much of the good flesh either. Be sure that there is enough flesh to help the peach keep it’s shape too.
  3. Place the peaches cut side up in your dish.
  4. In a small bowl, mix together the flour, sugars, cinnamon, salt, chilled coconut oil and oats. Use a fork to stir, until the mixture becomes crumbly, like sand.
  5. Fill the center of each peach with the streusel mixture.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is lightly browned and the peaches are soft. Be sure that no streusel falls on the pan, as it will burn.
  7. Let cool slightly, then serve with an allergy-friendly vanilla ice cream.
