Making Your Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes Gluten-Free: Ingredient Swaps Explained
Ensuring this delicious sloppy joe recipe is completely gluten-free is simpler than you might think. The main ingredients that typically contain gluten are buns, bouillon/broth bases, and some Worcestershire sauces. But don’t worry, we have fantastic, easy-to-find alternatives:
- Gluten-Free Buns: The bun is crucial for any sloppy joe experience. For an excellent gluten-free option, we highly recommend Schar and Canyonbakehouse brands. Their buns hold up well to the saucy filling. If you also need an egg-free option, Little Northern Bakehouse offers a great choice that is both gluten-free and egg-free. Always check labels, as brands can vary widely in their allergen statements.
- Gluten-Free Bouillon/Broth Base: Many conventional bouillon powders or broth bases can contain hidden gluten. To keep your recipe safe and flavorful, I prefer using Orrington Farms bouillon. It delivers rich beef flavor without any gluten-containing ingredients. Always double-check the ingredient list on any broth product you use.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This tangy, savory condiment is a flavor powerhouse, but some brands include gluten, often due to soy sauce as an ingredient which can contain wheat. It’s vital to check the label carefully. While not explicitly marked “gluten-free” in all regions, we’ve found Heinz Worcestershire sauce to be a reliable option that does not list wheat or other gluten-containing ingredients in its formulation. If you have severe allergies, always verify with the manufacturer or choose a certified gluten-free brand like Lea & Perrins in some markets. If you have a fish allergy, you can simply omit the Worcestershire sauce or find a fish-free alternative, as anchovies are a traditional ingredient in many brands.
While the other core ingredients like olive oil, onion, ground beef, ketchup, and various spices are generally gluten-free, it is absolutely essential to read every single label for every ingredient you use. Manufacturers can change recipes without notice, and gluten can hide in unexpected places, especially in processed foods. Taking this extra step ensures your meal remains entirely safe for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
Achieving Dairy-Free Creamy Goodness in Your Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
The hallmark of a traditional Philly Cheesesteak is, of course, the melted cheese – whether it’s the classic Cheese Whiz or sharp Provolone. For those needing a dairy-free option, the goal isn’t just to omit the cheese, but to replace that unique umami, savory, and slightly tangy flavor. As with all my dairy-free recipes, I’ve found the most effective approach is to build an incredibly flavorful base that ensures you won’t miss the texture or taste of dairy.
This recipe achieves its dairy-free cheesy essence through a generous blend of spices and a key ingredient: nutritional yeast. Often celebrated as a vegan cheese substitute, nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast that comes in yellow flakes and boasts a distinctly savory, nutty, and cheesy flavor profile without any dairy. It’s a wonderful addition that adds complexity and depth to the sloppy joe sauce, mimicking that desired “cheesy” undertone.
Some people have a strong aversion to the flavor of nutritional yeast, and I understand it’s not for everyone. It certainly has its place in cooking, and I don’t use it in every recipe. However, in dishes like these Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes, its unique flavor truly shines and enhances the overall experience. If you’ve tried it in the past and weren’t a fan, I genuinely encourage you to give it another shot in this particular recipe – you might be pleasantly surprised! If you absolutely prefer to omit it, that’s perfectly fine. Just be aware that nutritional yeast also acts as a thickening agent, so if you leave it out, reduce the water by 1/4 cup to prevent the sauce from becoming too runny. You can also add a pinch more cornstarch if a thicker consistency is desired.
Selecting the Best Ground Beef for Your Sloppy Joes
The quality and type of ground beef you choose can significantly impact the flavor and texture of your sloppy joes. For this recipe, I typically opt for ground beef that is either 70% lean/30% fat or 80% lean/20% fat. There’s a simple culinary truth to remember: fat equals flavor. The higher fat content renders down during cooking, infusing the meat and vegetables with a richer, more robust taste that’s characteristic of a great Philly Cheesesteak.
While a fattier blend provides superior flavor, don’t worry about excess grease. After browning the beef, it’s easy to drain off any extra fat, leaving just enough to carry the flavors without making the sloppy joes oily. This process ensures you get all the delicious taste benefits without a heavy, greasy feel. If using leaner ground beef (e.g., 90/10), you might want to add a little extra olive oil to the pan when sautéing the onions to compensate for the lack of natural fat and ensure everything cooks beautifully.
Can This Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe Recipe Be Soy-Free?
For those managing soy allergies, making this recipe soy-free is entirely possible with careful ingredient selection. Soy can be a hidden allergen in several processed food items, so meticulous label reading is key. You’ll particularly need to focus on three main components:
- Bouillon/Broth Base: Many broth and bouillon products contain soy. Look for brands that specifically state they are soy-free. Some natural food stores or online retailers offer soy-free bouillon options, often made with vegetable or beef extracts without soy derivatives.
- Worcestershire Sauce: As mentioned in the gluten-free section, some Worcestershire sauces contain soy sauce, which is a common source of soy. Ensure the brand you choose is explicitly soy-free. If finding one is difficult, you can omit it entirely and adjust other seasonings to taste, or seek out a coconut aminos-based Worcestershire alternative.
- Hamburger Buns: A significant number of bread products, including hamburger buns, can contain soy flour, soybean oil, or other soy-derived ingredients. Always opt for certified soy-free buns. Brands like Little Northern Bakehouse are often good candidates for multiple allergen-free needs, but always verify the most current ingredient list.
As always, extend this diligent label-checking to all other ingredients, including ketchup, spices, and any condiments you might add, to ensure a completely soy-free meal.
Essential Tools for Making These Easy Sloppy Joes
One of the beauties of this Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe recipe is how straightforward it is, requiring only a few basic kitchen tools:
- Cutting Board and Chef’s Knife: Essential for safely and efficiently dicing your onion and green bell pepper. A sharp knife makes prep work much quicker.
- Measuring Cups and Spoons: Accuracy is key for balanced flavors, especially with spices and liquids. These ensure your sloppy joe sauce is perfectly seasoned and thickened.
- Large Skillet: The star of the show! A spacious skillet allows you to brown the beef evenly and gives all the ingredients enough room to cook and meld together without overcrowding, which is crucial for flavor development.
- Spatula: Ideal for breaking up the ground beef, stirring the ingredients, and scraping down the sides of the skillet to ensure everything is well combined and cooked evenly.

Notes
*Our allergies, while severe and that get re-tested frequently, are such that we can go strictly by what’s on the label. I do not call companies to see what things are derived from, or call manufacturers to see about potential cross contact. If your allergies require you to do so, please do your own homework. I cannot assure you of any ingredient’s safety, only you can do that. I simply share what works for our family
**If you are going to feed this to someone with food allergies, and you yourself do not have food allergies, I HIGHLY recommend having them check every single brand and ingredient you are using, to ensure they’re OK with each part of the recipe. And, to make sure you’ve talked to them about how to avoid cross contamination in your kitchen.
