Navigating the Holidays: Balancing Life, Work, and Festive Fun
Oh, the holiday season! It’s a wonderful time of year, yet it often brings a unique kind of juggling act, especially for us moms. If you’re a woman, chances are you completely understand the feeling of being pulled in a million different directions. The desire to create magical memories for your family clashes with the demands of daily life, work, and that ever-present “mom guilt.”
This year, my own holiday season started with an unexpected turn. My mother arrived earlier than planned due to my uncle’s passing (if you’ve been following my Instagram stories, you know the full story). While it was a challenging time, her early arrival meant three glorious weeks of having her with us. And let me tell you, my mom is truly an angel. Her unwavering support is incredible; she’s always saying things like, “Go lock yourself in your room and work, I’ll handle the dishes, kiss the babies, feed the children, and even play Transformers!”
You’d think with such an amazing offer, I’d be churning out a million projects. But instead, I found myself battling that familiar sense of guilt. On one hand, living far from family and working late nights to keep this blog running while raising little ones, I felt I should fully seize the opportunity of having a “free nanny.” It’s a rare gift! But then, another part of me just wanted to soak up every moment with my mom and enjoy quality time with my son while he was off school. And then, if I’m being completely honest, there was also the part that just wanted quiet, kid-free time to binge-watch Netflix’s The Crown alone in my room instead of tackling my to-do list. Ugh, the struggle is real!
Do you see why I’m so torn? This internal debate perfectly explains why I’m sharing yet ANOTHER rice krispie holiday treat recipe (seriously, they’re like adult play-doh for me – check out the bottom of this post for more fun variations!). So, if you’re feeling equally stretched and pulled in different directions this holiday season, take heart. You can still create adorable, festive treats without spending an entire day baking.
Easy Holiday Crafting: Family Fun with Allergy-Friendly Rice Krispie Trees
One of the best parts about making these Allergy-Friendly Rice Krispie Christmas Trees was that it perfectly doubled as a way to spend precious time with my family and get a blog post done for you all. Have I mentioned how much I absolutely love multi-tasking, especially when it involves family bonding and delicious treats?
We turned the decorating process into an efficient and fun assembly line. I handled cutting the cooled Rice Krispie mixture into neat triangles. My mom then carefully inserted the gluten-free pretzel sticks into the base, creating sturdy tree trunks. I followed up with the frosting, piping it on in festive zig-zags. Finally, the kids, with wide smiles, got to place the colorful Skittles “ornaments” along the frosting. It was so easy, engaging, and genuinely fun for everyone involved!
Once our adorable trees were complete, handing them out to neighbors was a breeze. I simply placed each tree into individual cellophane bags and tied them off with pretty ribbons. Done and done! This simple gesture of holiday cheer brought so much joy, without any of the usual stress associated with elaborate holiday baking.
Your Allergy-Friendly Ingredient Questions Answered (FAQ)
Now, let’s get to the important part – your burning questions about making these treats completely allergy-friendly. I know you’ll have them, so I’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to ensure your Rice Krispie Christmas Trees are safe and delicious for everyone.
For the Allergy-Friendly Pretzels:
Choosing the right pretzels is key for a gluten-free and allergy-safe treat. We consistently use Snyder’s gluten-free pretzels. Full disclosure: this isn’t a sponsored endorsement. In fact, I’ve tried reaching out to them countless times to express my undying love, and they’ve never responded! So, if you know anyone at Snyder’s, please let them know they have a huge fan here! Glutino also offers excellent straight gluten-free pretzels. For those concerned about soy (Snyder’s and Glutino both contain soy), Quinn Snacks (which a friend highly recommends, though I haven’t tried them personally) also makes straight pretzels that I believe are top-8-allergen-free. Always double-check their labels to be certain!
If gluten isn’t a concern for your dietary needs, feel free to use any standard pretzel that works for your family. And remember, if pretzels or soy are an issue, these adorable trees would still be incredibly cute and delicious without the pretzel stick at the bottom!
For the Allergy-Friendly Cereal:
A common misconception is that regular Rice Krispies are gluten-free. Unfortunately, most conventional and generic brands of crispy rice cereal contain barley malt, which means they are not gluten-free (though they may be wheat-free). For a truly gluten-free option, I highly recommend Malt-O-Meal Crispy Rice and Erewhon Crispy Rice Cereal. Both are fantastic gluten-free substitutions that hold up beautifully in this recipe. Always look for cereals specifically labeled “gluten-free” to ensure safety.
For the Allergy-Friendly Food Dye:
Many of you have asked about the food coloring I use. It’s a bit of a confession: I used Wilton’s food coloring gels for a long time before I became diligent enough to scrutinize their labels. It’s easy to overlook that food coloring might contain hidden allergens! I have called Wilton in the past, and their representative informed me that they now include a “may contain” label if their products are processed in a facility with common allergens. We have personally used them without issue, but it is crucial that you always do what you are comfortable with regarding your family’s specific food allergies. Consult your allergist and trust your instincts. I’ve heard excellent feedback (though I haven’t personally tried them yet) that AmeriColor offers a range of allergy-friendly food gels with clear allergen statements, making them a popular choice in the allergy community.
For Allergy-Friendly Marshmallows:
Marshmallows are a cornerstone of any good Rice Krispie treat, and choosing the right ones is vital for allergy safety. If you need this recipe to be vegan, it’s essential to use plant-based marshmallows like Dandies All Natural Marshmallows. (Seriously, does anyone know the Dandies team? I feel like I should work with them given how often I champion their amazing product!).
I also have many readers who swear by Smashmallow. While I haven’t used them myself, I hear they are not only delicious but also corn-free and excellent at clearly labeling their ingredients, which is a huge plus for specific allergies.
For those who simply need an allergy-friendly option that isn’t necessarily vegan, we’ve never encountered an issue with Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows. Our family manages allergies to wheat, gluten, dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut, soy, and goat’s milk, and Kraft has consistently worked for us. As always, prioritize what works for your individual dietary needs and meticulously check all labels!
*Please note an important distinction: this recipe can be made top-8-free by using marshmallows like Kraft, OR it can be made vegan if you use Dandies. However, it cannot be both at the same time, as Dandies marshmallows contain soy. Unfortunately, I have yet to discover a truly soy-free vegan marshmallow option.*
For a deeper dive into marshmallow options, you can consult this helpful ingredient comparison chart of all the big brands of marshmallows.
For Allergy-Friendly Ornaments:
To decorate our festive trees, we chose colorful Skittles. They add a wonderful pop of color and are generally free from common allergens. However, you truly have a wide array of options for colored candy. Surf Sweets jelly beans are another excellent choice, known for being free of many common allergens and made with natural colors and flavors. You could also consider small, safe chocolate chips (if applicable to your allergies) or even specially certified allergy-friendly sprinkles to add extra sparkle to your trees.
For the Frosting:
Wondering about the frosting? Well, just look in the recipe card below, silly! Just kidding, you can find my go-to recipe right here. My specially formulated frosting recipe is designed to be free from gluten, dairy, egg, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts, making it a safe and delicious vegan option for almost all dietary needs. It’s the perfect, creamy complement to these festive trees.
What if we can’t do coconut?
Not a problem at all! If coconut is an allergen or simply not preferred, you can easily substitute the coconut oil in the recipe with palm shortening. It functions similarly in the recipe, ensuring your treats maintain the right consistency and texture without any coconut concerns.
I sincerely hope that this guide helps us all alleviate some of that pervasive “mom guilt” and truly embrace and enjoy this wonderful holiday season a little more. Balancing everything can be challenging, but how incredibly fortunate are we to have such amazing, beautiful things to balance in our lives? Wishing all my dear readers a safe, joyful, and allergy-friendly holiday season. I truly appreciate you taking the time to stop by my little corner of the internet. Every click, share, and comment you make genuinely helps my family thrive.

The easiest tree decorating you’ll ever do – and no blinking lights or replacing bulbs! This festive, no-bake holiday treat is designed to be easily made allergy-friendly, ensuring all your favorite allergy kids can join in the fun. Simple decorating steps make this a perfect Christmas activity for little hands. These Allergy-friendly Rice Krispie Christmas Trees are free of: gluten, dairy, egg, peanut, & tree nuts. They can be vegan too!
Ingredients
- 3 Tablespoons of coconut oil (or if you can’t do coconut, palm shortening
- 6 cups of gluten-free crispy rice cereal (see post above for specific brand details and recommendations)
- 1 package of marshmallows (refer to the post above for allergy-friendly and vegan options)
- Green food dye (see post for allergy-friendly food coloring recommendations)
- Half a batch of my best dairy-free vanilla frosting
- Skittles (or other preferred allergy-friendly colored candies for ornaments)
- Gluten-free pretzels of choice (see post for recommended options)
Instructions
- In a large stock pot over medium-low heat, gently melt the coconut oil. Once melted, add the marshmallows and stir continuously until they are completely melted and smooth. Stir in your green food coloring until you achieve your desired festive shade of green. Remove the pot from the heat and thoroughly stir in your crispy rice cereal until every piece is evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture.
- Carefully pour the coated cereal mixture onto a flat, greased surface (a baking sheet lined with parchment paper works well). Using wet or greased hands, flatten and shape the mixture into a large, even rectangle or square. This will make cutting the triangles much easier.
- While the cereal mixture cools and sets, take this time to prepare your dairy-free vanilla frosting according to the recipe instructions.
- Once the frosting is ready, transfer it to a piping bag or a sturdy Ziploc bag and snip a small corner. When the cereal slab has cooled sufficiently to handle, cut it into festive triangle shapes to resemble mini Christmas trees. Gently press a gluten-free pretzel stick into the bottom of each triangle to form the tree trunk. Pipe the frosting onto the top of each tree in decorative zig-zags. Finally, place your colorful Skittles or other chosen candies along the frosting to act as cheerful ornaments.
- Store your completed Rice Krispie Christmas Trees in an airtight container until you are ready to serve or enjoy them. A note on storage: if you used coconut oil in the recipe, the treats may become a bit firm or tough if stored in the refrigerator due to coconut oil’s sensitivity to temperature changes. For the best soft and chewy texture, it’s best to keep them at room temperature.
